We are Sparrowhawk Flowers

I’m Susan.

I love flowers.

 

I grew up around garden kind of people. My mom in Georgia and grandfather in Florida had beautiful gardens that they lovingly tended to all their lives. And I caught the bug too.

​

My first real job was at Pike Nurseries in the Atlanta area. I worked the cash register and got to see all the fun and cool plants people were bringing home. In our area there were a lot of Hostas and Hydrangeas and lots of bedding plants going out. Every now and then someone would buy something exciting and the staff would all come to see who bought it. It was a fun job and I learned a lot about plants. ​

When I moved to Seattle, I was astounded by the different foliage on the trees, how incredibly tall they were and how beautiful the air smelled. I remember the first time I saw a Dahlia and could not take my eyes off it! Then I saw a Peony and the rest is history- I caught the bug and have been gardening ever since.

​

In 2016, my husband Scott and I bought my first home in Des Moines, WA with our son Lucas. Since then, we’ve renovated the overgrown areas, tore down a dilapidated shed and fence and installed raised beds and a greenhouse.

​

I went through the WSU Extension Master Gardener Certification in 2020 and have been volunteering at clinics in the Des Moines area ever since. I just celebrated my 5-year anniversary this year! My favorite part of being a Master Gardener is when I see the excitement in my client’s faces when we discover the answer to their problem or find *just* that right plant for their space!
